Internet of Things 12 Comments

The Internet has come a long way over past 30 years. Machine to Machine communication is on the rise, enabling devices to exchange and act upon information without a person ever being involved. The challenge for the embedded industry is to measure the value of this growing interconnected web of machines; this is called Internet of Things. In the Internet of Things (IoT) model, many of the objects that surround us will be on the network in one form or another. Information and communication systems will be invisibly embedded in the environment around us. To meet this challenge Radio frequency identification and sensor network technologies will have to rise.

Smarter connectivity – Biggest IoT Application

The connectivity should be smarter without any change in the existing network and context-aware computation using network resources is a fundamental part of Internet of Things (IoT) technology. The computing paradigm should go further ahead from traditional mobile computing scenarios for the successful evolution of Internet of Things. Currently smart phones and portable devices are used for mobile computing. More application areas for the Internet of Things are Wearable, Building and home automations, Smart Cities, Smart Manufacturing, Healthcare, Automotive and many more.

History of internet of things

“Internet of Things” as a term was first composed by Kevin Ashton in 1999 in the reference of supply chain management. But in the past decade, the definition has been more referred covering wide range of Internet of Things applications like transport, healthcare, utilities, etc. The definition of Internet of Things has been changing the evolution in technology but the main aim of preparing computer sense information without the aid of human interpretation remains the same. The internet revolution led to the interconnection between people at a brisk scale and pace. The interconnection between things to create a smart surrounding will be the next revolution. The total number of interconnected IoT devices has overtaken the actual number of people in 2011. For the Iot to work, all devices must be able to connect seamlessly.

Internet of Things can be expressed in three paradigms – internet-oriented, things oriented and semantic oriented. The IoT is useful only in those applications domain where the three paradigms intersect.

Components required for Internet of Things

1. Hardware – It should be made up of sensors, actuators and embedded communication hardware.

2. Middleware – It is on-demand storage and computing tools for data analytics.

3. Presentation – It’s easy to understand visualization and interpretation tools which can be widely accessed on different platforms and which can be designed for different applications.

These 3 are the major constitute in success of a Internet of Things business. There are several application domains which will be impacted by the emergence of Internet of Things. The prevalence of Bluetooth Technology devices reflects the current IoT influence in a number of digital products such navigation systems, car hands-free sets, mobile phones, etc.

The idea of Internet of Things can be seen from two reference—‘Internet’ centric and ‘Thing’ centric. Internet services are the main focus for Internet centric and data is accumulated by the objects. In the Thing centric architecture, the smart objects take the center stage.
